I decided to major in communication. It's a major with a wide variety of career opportunities and yet everyone seems confused as to why I would pick it. When people ask what my major is, this list of eleven questions is usually their next response.
1. "Why don't you have a real major? Like something with math or science?"
Oh my bad for not wanting to major in chemical engineering.
2. "Isn't that just talking? Why do you need a degree for that?"
Yes, I'm spending four years of my life and thousands of dollars to learn how to talk.
3. "So, do you wanna be a reporter?"
Some people (myself included) do want to be reporters. However, you can go into camera and sound work, public relations, sales, journalism, advertising, and the list goes on and on.
4. "Can you edit my papers for me?"
Just because I'm studying communication and writing does not mean that I wanna be your personal editor.
5. "That's too broad of a major? Why not focus on one thing?"
Why does everyone assume this? Communications can be as specific as you want it to be.
6. "I wish my major was that easy."
Yes, it's so easy when you have two 10-page papers due, and have to give a speech on the same day.
7. "Do you even have homework?"
No, we just watch Netflix. Yes, we have just as much homework as every college student does. Just because it isn't organic chem doesn't mean it's not difficult.
8. "So is your homework just looking at Twitter?"
While occasionally checking social media may be part of an assignment, it's usually more like writing endless essays and reading Neil Postman.
9. "So is this degree just to hide the fact you're in school to get your MRS degree?"
You deserve to be slapped if you ask this.
10. "So is all you do group projects?"
This is actually true and it's awful and we don't wanna talk about it.
11. "What does communications even mean?"
What does this question even mean?
