Throughout a series of sick days, I had the chance to watch a couple of comedy specials on Netflix. One of them stuck out in particular. This comedy special was by Iliza Shlesinger and she is a QUEEN.
Throughout this special, she discusses how she recently got engaged at thirty-five years old.
*Cue cheers from the entire audience*
As she discusses her romance, she is very candid about how people treat romance in this modern day and age. Everything done seems obligatory but she keeps the entire crowd honest about how they feel. How people ask the bride to be how she and her fiance met, about the wedding, and everything the happy couple has experienced.
Although most of the questions are genuine, there is an underlying part of girls that she brings to light. We all want to know how to find "a suitor,"We all want love, we all want the happy ending. However, we often try to fake happiness for others because we struggle with our own.
In this current day and age, we all want to be insta-worthy. We want to have looks that will make heads turn and we want someone to fall in love with us. However, we spend our time picking ourselves apart and looking at every single flaw on our body as something from hell.
As someone who has struggled with body positivity and self-love for a long time, this comedy special actually resonated with me on a different level. Between all of the laughs and witty jokes I found myself cackling to, I saw a deeper message.
I am okay just the way I am. I am nerdy, a little overweight (I'm working on that in a HEALTHY fashion), and I am a pretty cool person.
Although she might not have made this the intention of her comedy special, I am really grateful for it. It was a swift kick in the pants to work on getting where I want to be in life instead of focusing on constantly wanting to pursue love. I mean, she met her fiance on a dating app. It just works for some people in this day and age. That's life.
