The first week back to school is always hard. The alarms go off way earlier than they have all summer, and you stay up later because you have to reunite with all of the college friends you've missed.
I have always struggled to stay awake during class, but this time of the year is especially difficult. Here are eight ways to make sure you stay awake.
1. Drink coffee. Although this seems obvious, many people forget how much of an instant effect this has. If I miss my morning coffee, it is almost impossible for me to stay awake through all of my classes.
2. Use eye drops. They are like caffeine for your eyes. They make you feel refreshed and ready for class.
3. Keep yourself busy. When the teacher’s voice is starting to put you asleep, just keep moving around. Whether it’s playing with your pencil, doodling in your notebook, or -- my personal favorite -- writing song lyrics on the page. Just keep moving. The more fidgety you are, the less likely you will fall asleep.
4. Go on your phone. Some teachers have strict policies about cell phones in class, so this one may not always work. But, if you’re able to check Instagram or Facebook quickly, something might spark your interest and make you more aware in class.
5. Chew gum. Make sure you have gum or mints, the more minty the better. This will stimulate some of the senses and keep you from falling asleep.
6. Hold your breath. I’m serious, try holding your breath for a little and your focus might return. Just don’t make it obvious and take a huge gasping breath.
7. Sit near a friend. Tell them to hit you, if you start dozing off. This will immediately bring back your attention. Friends will always have your back.
Go to the bathroom. If all else fails ask to leave to go to the bathroom and just walk around. Maybe go up and down the stairs a few times.
