As an indie rock band from Ohio, Walk the Moon knows how to inspire with basically all of their catchy, addictive songs. Each is infused with playfulness, wisdom, and enough heart to make you feel the punch of the lyrics and the rhythm thump in your chest. Every song on both of their albums, "Walk the Moon" and "Talking is Hard," will make you want to hit replay over and over. The amazing thing about these songs, and music in general, is that you can take away your own meaning, whatever has happened to you, however you feel, and you can take comfort in music. Of course almost any Walk the Moon lyric is worthy enough to be someone's favorite and impart inspiration and wisdom, but here are just a few to get you started.
1. "I can lift a car up all by myself." - "I Can Lift a Car"
To me, the meaning of this song is simple and straightforward--you can do anything. When the odds are against you, you can harness all of your strength and overcome. You're a superhero, go get 'em.
2. "We got no money but we got heart." - "Anna Sun"
When I hear this song, I can't help but smile and sing along. As one of their bounciest and most famous tracks, "Anna Sun" helped launch Walk the Moon into stardom while being infectiously upbeat and as inspirational as its contemporaries. It's saying that even when you have nothing else, you've got your dreams and those you love, and you can make the most of it.
3. "I almost waved goodbye when you let your hair fall in your face. And I often wonder why the things that I want are so hard to find. But I often fail to see the things that I need are right here by my side." - "Sidekick"
This one reminds me of the little things that people do that just make you go "I just really love you." Your friends and family are all just so simply and naturally beautiful and your love for them just amplifies that. Plus, we spend so long looking high and low for what we think we want, straining our eyes and hearts that we keep looking past what's right beside us. Cliche? Yes. True? Often. Beautiful? Undoubtedly.
4. "You got a look in your eyes. I knew you in a past life. One glance and the avalanche drops, one look and my heartbeat stops." - "Avalanche"
This song is literally about a love that spans lifetimes. Cheesy, yes, but glorious and beautiful still. Just the sight of the one you love can send tremors through your body and flood your heart. The connection is a force of nature, powerful and pure.
5. "I said that's what you had but you don't have it anymore." - "Iscariot"
A bit more serious and dark, to me, this song and lyric reminds me that we've all made mistakes. We have all royally screwed up and we've all been royally screwed over. We lose friends and people we love and sometimes they lose us. You can do your best to fix it but there comes a time where you must accept what you have done and what's been done to you, learn from it, and let it go.
6. "You speak your mind, you cannot take it back, walk a tightrope, walk a little tightrope." - "Tightrope"
This song and lyric speaks to the power of putting yourself out there. You have to be careful with other people's hearts and with your own. It can be a bit of a precarious spectacle, but it's a rush and amazing things can come from it. As someone who can be a bit bashful with my feelings, "Tightrope" inspires and empowers me to speak my mind (and not be afraid that I cannot take it back.)
7. "Different colors, we carry each other." - "Different Colors"
Inspired by the fight for equality of races, genders, and sexuality, this song and lyric champions the power and beauty of human unity, that even though we are different and individual, we support each other and make one another stronger.
8. "Take me with you, cause even on your own you are not alone. Take me with you, cause even by yourself, my love, you are something else." - "Portugal"
My personal favorite song and lyric by Walk the Moon and in general at the moment. In a track commentary, lead singer Nick Petricca says this song commemorates the people in his life now and in the past, and serves as a reminder that they are still close. He says, "it's a sad song but it's a happy song too." The lyric is simple and because of that it is beautiful. I would find myself doodling it in empty notebook pages and playing it over and over on Spotify. It pulls no punches and comes out and says exactly what it needs to say-- that you are never, ever alone, that you, as you are, are incredible simply because you are you.
