Hanukkah is the Jewish holiday that celebrates the Maccabees defeat of the Persians and the eternal light of the temple burning until more oil could be brought in for a total of eight days. Jews all around the world spend eight nights celebrating the miracles that took place long ago. Hanukkah is not the most important Jewish holiday, but it is one of the most fun. Below are the eight reasons Hanukkah is one of the best holidays.

1)The holiday itself lasts for eight days.

The more the merrier definitely applies to this holiday.

2) The food is great.

Most Hanukkah foods are deep fried in oil as a way to remember the miracle of the oil lasting eight days. Fried latkes and jelly-filled doughnuts are just a few of the amazing foods that are a part of the holiday.

3)The Rugrats Hanukkah movie.

There is an abundance of Christmas movies, but not much to represent Hanukkah. The Rugrats Hanukkah movie was a stable part of the holiday. It gave Jewish kids cartoons that they could identify with.

4) The music.

Hanukkah is a happy holiday and the music reflects the fun nature of the holiday. Between Dan Nicholas and Debbie Friedman there are plenty of fun Hanukkah tunes to listen to while putting out the menorah and making latkes.

5) The dreidel game is a great game.

The last day of Hebrew school for the year was always spent playing the dreidel game. The game was highly competitive.

6) Gelt.

This was your mom’s favorite little gift to give, and you loved receiving it as well.

7) Family.

It is always crazy but a good time when the whole family gets together.

8) Celebrating the miracle of the survival of the Jewish religion.

The Jewish people are still around even after many attempts to get rid of us, we’re still here thousands of years later.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
