I have always enjoyed live music. My friends and I have stood in line for hours just to get semi-close to our current love, whether that be David Archuleta, G Eazy, or Mac Miller. There's nothing like hearing someone sing live for the first time — to see the expression on their face when they're singing their favorite part of their song. Don't get me wrong, those concerts were incredible and I loved every minute of it; however, the pushing and shoving definitely got to us after awhile and once it was over, we couldn't wait to get home.
I, along with everyone else, have heard the stereotypes of EDM concerts — how they're filled with drugged up kids who couldn't even look straight or people passing out in the crowds from the heat. Those images made me hesitant to try out an EDM concert but what's life if you're going to believe everything you hear without trying it first, right?
The DJ, Diplo, was coming to Des Moines for the first time and many of my friends were planning on going. I decided to tag along to see what all the hype was about. Stepping into 7 Flags Event Center, I could see nothing but smiling faces throughout the arena. Every person was so ecstatic to be there. It was the first place I've ever been where I felt absolutely no judgement....no one cared what you were wearing or how you were acting, they just were there celebrating music and life.
Once the music started we headed into the crowd and how everyone was acting absolutely amazed me. I didn't get shoved once. NOT ONCE! It was like people were helping us move forward into the crowd. No one seemed to care how close they were to the stage but just that they were able to be there having the time of their life. The crowd felt like a family and the music was the heart of it all. I couldn't wipe the smile off my face for whole five hour concert. The music was just so exhilarating and every time the base dropped, the crowd united and I could feel the vibrations through my entire body. The electricity that filled that arena was truly astounding.
Even if you're not a fan of EDM music (which I barely was until this concert), I recommend exploring a show strictly because of positivity that is constantly vibing through each person. Even if you're standing in the way back of the arena, you're feeling a connection to the crowd. It truly was an eye opening experience for me and I absolutely cannot wait until the next show I'm lucky enough to attend.
