From coffee cups to plastic bags, college students are guilty of using it all. On a budget, college students are more susceptible to using single-use plastics in their daily lives. But the truth is, there are many ways to be environmentally friendly without spending money on fancy water filters or all organic products!
Ditch the plastic
c1.staticflickr.comThis is probably one of the easiest ways to be more environmentally friendly on campus. Temple University offers a multitude of filtered water fountains on campus. Instead of purchasing a new single-use plastic bottle every time you're thirsty, perhaps consider buying a reusable one. You will not only be saving money but the environment too! Reusable coffee cups are another great way to reduce your plastic use. Companies like Starbucks even reward those with reusable cups!
Consider recycled textbooks

This little trick is a win-win for both you and the environment. Many college students do not take a second glance to their textbooks once the semester is over. Make some cash by selling your used textbooks instead of stashing them!
Reuse food containers
KC PoeAnother great way to be environmentally friendly is by reusing plastic and glass food containers. Glass jars, for example, make great glasses and perfect containers for other items. I use mine to water my plants and to collect loose change. Plastic take out containers are great for food storage. Simply clean it out and reuse it for future lunches!
Ps. If you do use single-use plastic (ie; water bottles, coffee cups, plastic bags, etc.) make sure to recycle it instead of discarding it into a waste bin.
Thrift and donate clothing
College is full of social gatherings, job interviews, and club related events. That means that we are always trying to dress to fit the occasion. Instead of purchasing a new outfit for each event, perhaps go to a local thrift or vintage shop. Those stores are fit with clothing for every occasion, not to mention you will be saving a ton of money.
While you're at the thrift store, consider donating some of your old clothing. That is a great way to recycle and clean up your closet.
Reduce energy and water usage
When you leave your dorm, turn out your lights and unplug your devices. Likewise, take shorter showers and turn off the faucet when you are not using it. This sounds very simple but, saving electricity and water really does make a difference.
In the end, incorporating these habits into your everyday life will help you become a more environmentally friendly college student. The truth is, every little thing you do to help our planet thrive truly does have a larger impact!
