Gerald Earl Gillum aka G-Eazy—sometimes referred to as Young Gerald—is a hip-hop artist and producer from Oakland, California. His music career peaked with his sophomore album "When It's Dark Out." His well-known hit "Me, Myself & I" featuring singer-songwriter Bebe Rexha earned him a platinum record.
Putting my fangirl bias aside, there is no doubt G-Eazy is one of the most talented and versatile rappers as of late. If you think he's a one trick pony, you clearly haven't allowed your ears to explore deep enough into his music career.
G-Eazy has released four studio albums and several mixtapes along with singles that reveal his versatility and his long journey from when he was barely starting out to his present-day success. Each individual album gives off a different vibe that tells a completely different story from the previous.
"When It's Dark Out" with its 17 songs displays a wide range of genres including hip-hop, R&B and pop. The album's song lyrics exhibit a variety of emotions that contribute to the album's eminence. "When It's Dark Out" celebrates G-Eazy's fame while simultaneously revealing his struggle of coping with it. This album, along with his previous work, offer numerous collaborations that showcase his ability to work with a plethora of music artists.
Young Gerald's talent isn't limited to the studio. Along with his rap skills, he's also a natural-born entertainer (and that's saying a lot because I've been to countless hip-hop shows). Allow me to bring in my fangirl bias for a moment: G-Eazy knows how to put on a damn good show. His performances are dynamic yet smooth and his stage presence isn't overbearing whatsoever. I saw G-Eazy live twice back to back in 2016—for the When It's Dark Out Tour and Endless Summer Tour—and I have no regrets except that I couldn't watch him a third time.
I admire G-Eazy's humble attitude as well as his work ethic. He certainly portrays a "no rest for the wicked" mindset. He worked for his success; it didn't merely fall into his lap. Whether you like his music or not, no one can deny he's an accomplished hip hop artist who perfectly embodies perserverence.
