America's eating habits are some of the worst in the world. We eat an awful amount of processed foods. Which are not only factory made, but also high in sodium, sugar, and other additives. In an article published in Live Science they discuss a study completed in France that says the eating habits of American's could possibly lead to not only health problems, but an early death as well. The study found an association with consuming the ultra processed foods can lead to a higher risk of death over a seven year period. The study showed that the unhealthy eating habits can cause early heart disease, cancer, and other diseases all potentially leading to an early demise. The article defines ultra processed as foods that "contain multiple ingredients and are manufactured through a multitude of industrial processes." They also include numerous examples including some of our favorite snacks including ice cream, candies, energy bars, cold cuts, pre-ready meals, and packaged cakes and cookies. The research conducted by the University of Paris analyzed data from over 44,000 adults who were over the age of 45. These participants were told to catalog their food, and then for the next seven years these scientist's checked in with them. It concluded that with a 10% increase in the amount of processed foods they were eating participants had a 14 percent higher risk of death. The researches noted numerous times that the study only proved an association and not causation. As Americans or any persons this study not only further proves the need for a cleaner diet, but shows us that it not only contributes to our weight, but our life expectancy as well. The only solutions that can diminish this problem is to start focusing on a cleaner diet overall. We need to limit the amount of processed foods were are consuming, and attempt to create wholesome meals at home with fresh natural ingredients.
