I feel so much better when I eat vegetables like spinach, avocado and bell peppers as opposed to processed meat patties on buns, but sometimes it so hard to get access to quick and affordable healthy food. I spend a lot of time in Superior, Wisconsin and while I really do like the town, food with any sort of nutrient value is next to impossible to find. They have grocery stores, but then where do you prepare it?
There is also the undeniable reality that a lot of people would do anything to avoid getting out of their cars when it is freezing cold. If only someone would open up a healthy drive-thru! They haven’t around here yet, and it doesn’t seem to be a problem that will be soon amended, so I have decided to take matters into my own hands.
Motivated by wanting to stay somewhat slim, and feel alive instead of like a shriveled up little blob, I have started to experiment with healthy food on the go. This means planning ahead so you're not dicing carrots in your car at lunch break, but as anti-American as it might sound, there are a lot of benefits to preparing your food for the day before you run out the door in the morning.
It is cheaper by far than those depressing, yet mysterious meat sandwiches are, even from a gas station that sells them at a price so affordable you can’t help but wonder what they are even made of. You feel better eating your own food than when you eat anything from a fast food drive thru. Seriously, even the stuff that seems sort of healthy like a pita with lettuce on it is still a definite risk to your gastrointestinal future. Who knows when the vegetables were chopped, or how long they have been stored, and as I mentioned it often happens that vegetables are not even included in most fast food and convenience store food items.
If you would like to feel a little more alive on a daily basis, consider these cheap and only slightly time-consuming tips from a girl on the go:
- Invest in a couple cute and reusable to-go containers! This way you can save your leftovers or make salads to go in style.
- Get out of the car! It might seem easier and warmer to sit in a drive thru on a winter’s day, but what is the long-term price you pay?
- Give in to fruits, vegetables and nuts. You can eat other stuff too, but you will be amazed at your greater immunity and energy for life and all its challenges.
