Eat Cake For Breakfast

Sometimes it is beneficial to step out of your comfort zone and do something unexpected.

*Wake up, groggily make coffee, wash face, get dressed, make-up, go to class, eat lunch, watch Netflix, take a nap, eat dinner, homework/studying, bedtime.*

This is my normal day. Monday through Friday seems to be a constant cycle of the same exact events — going through the motions until I reach the weekend. But even then, the weekends always seem to offer the same old things too, and I am always left on Sunday feeling like I didn't really accomplish anything.

I like to think I have big plans. Plans I tend to accomplish over the course of my life, whenever I actually find the time to fit them in among the thousands of other responsibilities on my plate. But that's the catch. I feel like as a whole, people tend to push off the things they want to do for a time later down the road, and then stick to the repetitive schedule they know, but may not be completely happy with. It's all about comfortability, and the tendency for us to avoid going out of our comfort zone.

I have a coffee tumbler mug with the saying "Eat cake for breakfast" printed on it, and the other day I stopped and thought about what that could actually mean. I came up with this: it serves as a reminder to me of the importance of doing something unexpected every once and awhile. Some people, including me, often look upon spontaneity as attractive, yet stressful. I love making plans, I love having lists, I enjoy structure in my life, but sometimes I forget to let go of the reigns a bit. Spontaneity is good for your soul. Doing something that is against your normal can be the best thing for you. It seems, that we very often get so involved in our scheduled lives that we forget what it's like to have fun on the spur-of-the-moment.

So do something unexpected. Don't always let time, money, fear, and what other people think, stop you from having an adventure. When we realize that we can not control every aspect of our lives, it is much easier to be happy. Because life is unpredictable, and things happen unexpectedly. While we want to have control over ourselves and the things that happen to us, we can't. So do something out of your normal, take a risk — sometimes things will go in your favor, and in other times they will not. We have to learn to roll with it. Take opportunities that arise in your life, because while they may not always turn out the way you want them to, they also could end up being the best thing to ever happen to you. The cool thing about it is, you can never know unless you take the chance.

"You have to take risks. We will only understand the miracle of life fully when we allow the unexpected to happen." ~ Paul Coelho

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
