When a university has a change, it is always hard for students to adjust to that change. Some students will see the change as positive and some will see it as negative. Students, faculty, staff, and alumni will have mixed emotions. Some will like the change and others will resent it, but as we move forward with this change, institutions hopefully will begin to see a togetherness form from within the university.
Eastern Illinois University recently went through a process of “rebranding.” A committee made up of Admissions, the EIU Book Store, Athletics, and one student representative formed in order to brainstorm, discuss, and choose a new logo for EIU. This committee worked with the Collegiate Licensing Company in order to come up with this new logo that would generate positive vibes.
I think the most important aspect about a change, like Eastern Illinois University’s new logo, is that it should unite the institution as a whole. This new logo should pump everyone up and generate more school spirit. The new logo, in my opinion, is more modern, different, unique, and makes EIU stand out, especially to other universities in the state. Our previous logo was outdated and our new logo is something I could imagine seeing when watching a collegiate sport on television. I also think the new font is much more unique than the previous one. It is sharp, clean, and memorable. We have used the previous logo since 2000 and it was time for a change.
I understand not every person is going to feel the same way as I do and love the new logo, but it breaks my heart to see all the negativity out there regarding Eastern Illinois University’s strive to rebrand our university. With the competition in the state of Illinois, EIU took it upon themselves to do something in order to appeal to more students and hopefully bring those in the EIU community together. I do not know what the overall effect the new logo will have on the students and the university, but only time will tell. My only advice is to stay positive. Change isn’t always a bad thing.
The key idea to remember is that we are all EIU. We all love this institution and I think what it needs from us the most at this time, is our support. Be proud and stay positive, Panthers.
