As the weather gets colder, and the days get shorter every college student is starting to prepare for long hours in the library staring at computer screens or library books. We all start using all of our money on coffee in an attempt to stay awake while we work and work on final papers and projects. However, eventually we all get to the point where we just get tired and stressed. We all then, have our own methods or dealing with finals stress, but here are some of my ways of dealing with it.
1. Taking a nap
While this one only really works if you're more ahead of the game, so that you don't just keep putting things off, taking a nap is super helpful when you just need time to absorb all of the information you've just crammed in your brain. Studies have shown that if you sleep right after studying, you do retain more of the information. Also you get to catch up on some of that much needed sleep.
2. Plan out your week
Whenever I feel like I just have so many things that I have to get done, I sit down and look at all of my course schedules and plan out every due date for at least the next two weeks. And then, if I have a big multi-step project, I plan out when I'm going to do each step. It really makes me feel like I have more of a handle on everything I have to do, so it isn't looming over my head.
3. Go somewhere with some friends
This might seem counterproductive, however taking a step back could really help. Taking a nice break where you leave the library or your room or even your desk, and don't think about your work can be helpful.
4. Eat and drink water regularly
This might not be helpful necessarily in the short term, but in the long term it is good to keep a regular diet so your body has the fuel to handle the stress you are under.
5. Exercise
When you exercise, your body releases endorphins and endorphins make you happy. And happy people don't shoot their husbands. Thanks mean girls. But really happy people, don't typically fail tests. It can be a really good stress reliever and it gives you time away from studying or working that is also productive.
6. The artistic outlet
Some people find coloring or singing or dancing really relieving. It gives your brain time to slow down and be less analytical for some time.
All of these suggestions are super helpful during the stressful exam period. And as long as doing these, does not add to your procrastination, they can be very productive when you have three exams and two papers and a project all due!
May the curve ever be in your favor.
