Drake is widely regarded as one of if not the best Rapper that is putting out music by the media, the public and a good number of other rappers and musicians. I however am not a fan of his and while you may think that makes me crazy, I simply have never really enjoyed Drake’s music other than two or three of his earlier songs.
This is not just because I am not a fan of the rap genre in general. To the contrary, I have a lot of different rap and hip hop artists that I listen to regularly. Along with not being a fan I have also been just confused about why so many people like his music because it just does not sound good to me. It especially confused me when there were artists who I prefered over Drake but were less well known would say that they aspired to be as good has him because I could not see how someone I liked would want to sound like someone I so harshly disliked. Most of the music by Drake I hear from friends or on the radio seems to have highly repetitive beats that are also quite generic along with lyrics that are slow, do not seem to flow well and are repetitive.
For this article I decided that I should get opinions from some friends who were fans of his and listen to his music to figure out why most people in my generation like his music so much and why I do not. Then something weird happened when I started to listen to his a few songs of his newer albums; I liked it. This shocked me as other than couple of his old songs I had not even tolerated most of his music and had thought that this could never happen.Honestly it also upset me because I had this idea of a great article I could write about how I do not like one of the biggest musical artists in the world and that many of his fans would like I had always thought that his flow and voice were boring and his lyrics and beats were repetitive.
After I listened to much of his new album Views and some of his older songs I realised that his music was good. One song that particularly skewed my view of his music was the song “One Dance” that had featured a creative beat and upbeat lyrics that just made the song fun to listen to. He did not talk about most topics that usually turn me away from rappers like how much they get laid, make money and do drugs. His beats although sometimes reparative were powerful and meshed well with the flow of his raps and lyrics.
This experience has shown me that your music taste can change drastically throughout your life and that you should never completely count out any musician no matter their genre, your past taste or their past work. I think I have finally understood why he is so popular it is because his music genuinely good. Now I am far from a fan but in the future I will definitely look into more of his music and see what I think of it.
