In my humble opinion, the medical comedy "Scrubs" is criminally underrated. The characters in this show are so complex and deep, yet lighthearted and hilarious, as they maneuver their way through the ins and outs of the daily lives of doctors and nurses in a teaching hospital. My favorite character is Dr. Percival Ulysses Cox, the Residency Director, and eventual Chief of Medicine at Sacred Heart. He is cynical, narcissistic, emotionally distant and angry, while also being compassionate, fatherly and always willing to teach.
However, his most prevailing character trait is his trademark sarcasm and sassiness. He uses that sarcasm to drive home his points and humiliate his interns and residents, all while guiding them through the trials and tribulations of becoming a doctor. Here are some great examples of that sarcasm and sassiness.
Our first example is one in which the series' main character, Dr. John Dorian, comes to Dr. Cox with a concern that he, well, doesn't seem to care for.
This next example is another one which shows the "on-your-feet thinking" one must posses to master the snappy comeback. This also shows the combination of verbal and physical humor that can really add an element of hilarity to your sarcasm. For context, the line spoken just prior to this motion is; "Ladies and Gentlemen, allow me to present: Man Not Caring."
Here we have an example of a straight up verbal beat-down directed at Dr. Dorian because of a mistake he presumably made. This example shows both his teaching side and his usual sarcastic side.
This next one comes directly after Dr. Cox has diagnosed a previously un-diagnosable patient, and it shows his narcissism and self-pride, but it also shows his on-your-feet thinking and quick wit. But, yeah, it might be a little sacrilegious...
This last one is an example of the pure, unadulterated humor and sarcasm that Dr.Cox possesses. When wanting everyone to leave him alone, he doesn't just say so, he verbalizes his wish with colorful, hurtful and utterly hilarious fashion.
So, as you can see, Dr. Perry Cox is a comedy heavyweight. His unique blend of sarcasm, narcissism, and humor out him into a category of television characters that can always make you laugh, no matter the occasion or your emotion at the time. His snappy comebacks and sarcastic lessons provide a different type of laugh for the viewer while also endearing him to the audience.
Here's to you, Dr. Cox, may we all hope to be as impactful as you someday.
