Recruitment may not be quickly approaching, but I know women interested in going Greek have already started preparing. This one goes out to all of the PNMs (Potential New Members) out there.
Do your research.
It is important to know the values and philanthropies of the sororities you will be introduced to during recruitment. This will help you learn whether or not you think you will be a good fit for certain ones.
Don't be afraid to let the sorority you love know that you have done your research.
I love when a PNM comes prepared with specific questions about my chapter. It kind of makes the conversations flow, and it feels like she really wants to be there.
On the topic of questions, do have a few questions for each house.
This is another one of those things that just makes the whole process run smoothly. We have questions for you, but it is nice to know what your thoughts and concerns are as well.
However, don't just expect your chapter member to ask every question.
Recruitment is not an interview. Therefore, most of us do not have 50 questions prepared for each PNM. The way I see recruitment is we are just trying to make friends with the PNMs, and friendship requires conversation as well as Q&A.
Do look presentable.
It is important to dress appropriately for each round. Ask your recruitment counselor for help as needed, or refer to the various resources online.
Don't get caught up in brand names.
Recruitment is about being yourself and finding your perfect fit. If you love Lilly Pulitzer and Tory Burch, by all means wear them. If those brands are not your thing, don't feel obligated to dress that way. If you look like you tried and you can carry on a conversation, you're going to seem a lot cooler than the girl dressed in stereotypical brands.
Do consult your friends for advice.
If you know girls in sororities at other schools or friends going through recruitment with you, ask them for help or guidance.
Don't listen to the campus talk.
Don't feel bad for liking a house that may not be seen as "good." Chances are, there is not a single house on your campus that isn't "good." Recruitment is about going where your heart leads you and branching out. It is not about what your mom, friends, boyfriend, etc. want. This is your experience, so do what you want.
Recruitment can be super stressful and nerve-wracking, but don't get overwhelmed! It is the beginning to what will be the best four years of your life with some of the best women you will ever meet. Good luck and go Greek!
