The dorms and I have a love/hate relationship. Most days I absolutely love my dorm and I love coming home to my dorm. There are definitely some downs to living in the dorms though, for sure. Sometimes they just remind me of a middle school trip at a Marmot hotel with the constant ruckus, and nonstop running like it's Olympic training for track or something crazy. Other times, it's like my safe spot. It's somewhere I can go and just focus because I don't share a room with anyone, so there's nobody there to bother me. I love the dorm because I got to decorate it myself and it's how I want it to be; it's cozy and it feels homey.
I adore living in the dorms because I get to walk down the halls, through the entrance and see so many people. I love saying hello and just being welcomed when I come in. The dorms are filled with people that I absolutely adore and it’s so nice coming back and being able to go to my friend's dorm and hangout and not have to worry about driving home. I never have to worry what time my mom wants me home or have to wake up at 6:30 for high school.
The dorms have taught me a lot, too. They've taught me how to be independent and not have to depend on my parents, or anyone else like I did in high school. It's time to be a big girl and do my own laundry, take responsibility of taking out my trash, cleaning my room and bathroom, and most importantly, making it to class on time without my mom coming to my room to yell at me because I slept in to the last possible moment.
If you have the opportunity to live in the dorms your freshman year, I highly recommend it because you get to meet your people. The people you'll want to continue talking to for the next four years. You'll find your future roommates for wherever you want to live the next couple years, and in the dorms, there's constant love and support. At the end of the day, everyone's there for each other and everyone accepts people's differences.
