1.The long hair
You see us everywhere, the girls that have hair dangling past their waists. You probably comment on how dead it looks, or something. Others may comment on how long it takes to grow it, or if we’ve ever cut it. Then of course the silly questions, does it fall in the toilet, have you strangled yourself, so you can’t ride with the windows down? Very rarely though are we asked, why we don’t cut it… Maybe people make their own assumptions, but today we're going to let you know just why we do what we do.
1 Corinthians 11 speaks about the hair of a woman in various ways. It's referred to as a covering, and demonstrates us submitting ourselves to God in all ways, and accepting the power He gives us. Verses 5 & 6 say, “but every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head; for that is even all one as if she were shaven. For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn: but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered.” This verse speaks how important it is to keep our glory intact and to submit ourselves to God. Doing this gains us power, glory and a connection with angels.
2. The modest dress
Skirts, 3 quarter length shirts, no low-cut shirts. We are typically the opposite of what the world is dressed in today. Most of the population resides in mainly denim shorts, tank tops, and skirts that leave nothing to the imagination. Seeing as we are the opposite when it comes to dress, we are often stared at, mocked, and humiliated by the people whom we come in contact with. It's not just some rule we follow for no reason. God demands modesty, and sexual differentiation through clothing items.
Biblical proof of God's demands for modesty are found several times throughout the Old and New Testament. Just two of the verses that give a clear demonstration of His commands are listed. 1 Corinithians 6:19-20 says "Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body." as well as 1 Timothy 2:9 which says " Likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire," Both of these verses are vague as to what attests to being modest. None the less, the Merriam Webster definition alone on modesty gives us insight on to what is pleasing to the Lord. The definition states "Modesty is behavior, manner, or appearance intended to avoid impropriety or indecency". This being said, the Bible is basically saying, don't do things to show your body in ways meant only for intimate and private times. This being said, we typically wear skirts that are not tight, and at least touch the knees, we wear shirts with higher necklines as well as longer sleeves and cover up the areas we shouldn't be flaunting.
3. Wearing Makeup and Jewelry
We as believers of the standards set forth in the Word of God do not wear jewelry or makeup. On the topic solely of makeup, the Bible says in Jeremiah 4:30, "And you, O desolate one, what do you mean that you dress in scarlet, that you adorn yourself with ornaments of gold, that you enlarge your eyes with paint? In vain you beautify yourself. Your lovers despise you; they seek your life." While the verse is not specifically commenting on the wearing of makeup, makeup in itself is apart of the vanity this verse condemns.
Jewelry is a whole other story. While wedding rings and simple wrist watches are allowed, we still try to keep them as far from being gaudy as possible. Lavish rings, bracelets necklaces and piercings are a conviction many of us hold. The Bible says in 1 Peter 3:3-4 "Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear— but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God's sight is very precious". We don't need the ornaments of jewelry for us to be beautiful in the Lord's eyes.
