Don't Tell Me How To Look, Especially On My Down Days

Why not wear what you want, look how you want, and not give any type of damn?

Don't Tell Me How To Look, Especially On My Down Days

I can not count how many times I have been sitting on my laptop or scrolling through my phone only to be confronted with someone somewhere telling me what I can and can't wear. There are so many opinions on the fact that I wear leggings almost everywhere, the fact that hoodies are my best friend or the fact that my style can go from "gothic" to "Barbie" as quick as my mood changes.

(My friends will tell you... that's a little scary sometimes.)

So many people tell me that I'm too fat, I'm too skinny, my body isn't proportionate, I should go on a diet and then when I do they yell at me that I don't need it. All in all, it feels like I'm constantly playing a bad game of Charades. I just want to ask: what is the point? Why do you care whether my friends and I are XXS or XXXXL? You're only bothered because you're spending your day staring at us.

I've read posts that say that certain clothes should only be worn for certain circumstances. Yes, I agree. Prom dresses are meant for Prom or other frilly/fancy dances. I'm not going to wear mine to class. However, you don't have to tell me continuously that my leggings are meant for the gym. Facts are, Janet, that the leggings I am currently wearing were never meant for the gym, they were meant for comfort and sitting in my 10 a.m. class, I don't care about your opinion. I care about my comfort.

But let's move on.

Why do people body-shame? Why are we judged on our weight? Most people think that the shame on weight lies solely on those who have a few more pounds than what is considered "average." However, those skinnier than others still face the same embarrassment. We have to face it: if we don't look like the air-brushed models on all of the magazines, we're shot down in more ways than one. The humor of it is that the models on the magazines don't even look like that... so why is it such a problem in modern society that I conform to your ideal body type in order for you to talk to me, to not tell me I look disgusting, to not ignore me when I ask for help?

Why is it that when a girl is raped, her clothes are looked at? As said best by a good friend of mine, clothes do not scream "RAPE ME!" Yet it always seems to be about how they look.

Why is it that men are turned down if they're muscular enough? Why is that if women aren't blonde enough, busty enough, tall enough that they're judged?

Believe me, I know that not everyone thinks like this. Not everyone believes in the stereotypes, but the amount of times I've seen this true is absolutely appalling.

Point is, it doesn't matter what you wear. It doesn't matter what you look like, you're going to get judged because people don't know how to keep their opinions to themselves.

So... why not wear what you want, look how you want, and not give any type of damn? Sounds like more fun, anyway.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
