New Year's Eve. Who will you kiss at midnight? A boyfriend? A stranger?
Nope, not me! I will be ringing in the new year with my best friends and keeping my lips sealed.
For me, a new year means a clean, blank slate. Some of the best and worst times have happened in 2015. While I hate that its time to let it go, I also love the idea of starting fresh and new.
So what does a kiss at midnight truly mean? There are many superstitions about receiving or not receiving a New Year's kiss. In total, a kiss at midnight is a statement of the year to come. The kiss is said to signify a year without loneliness and not getting one will leave the person alone all year. While this is all a superstition, it has clearly become a common act throughout the western parts of civilization. Here is why I do not need a kiss at midnight this New Year's Eve:
1. Because I am single, a kiss would only show desperation.
Being in a relationship, a kiss would signify a happy relationship for the future to come. I, on the other hand, am not in a relationship and chances are if I did find a midnight kiss, I will have only met him briefly that night which would only be because of some desperate need to fulfill a societal norm.
2. I am okay with spending 2016 alone—aka single.
These days, relationships are so unstable and fragile. Don't get me wrong, there are good ones out there but when people are so dead set on finding the "one," often times that is what keeps relationships from forming. I'm OK with being alone and letting the universe control my destiny. Just let whatever happens, happen.
3. The best company you can keep is yourself.
Be your own best friend. The link says it all.
4. I will spend the 10-second ball drop dancing alone.
The 10-second ball drop is just a scrambled mess of trying to find that one person to kiss when the clock strikes midnight. No thank you, I'd rather enjoy these last 10 seconds of 2015 stress-free and with a smile on my face.
5. Dancing alone is better than kissing.
What is stress-free and puts a smile on my face? Dancing alone to my favorite song. And that, is where you will find me doing this New Year's Eve.
Whether you kiss the love of your life at midnight, that cutie that's been eyeing you all night, or skip the kiss altogether, make it the best last 10 seconds of 2015. Its been a good run, Happy New Year's all!
