To all of my fellow writers:
Why do we do what we do? Why do we write, and create poetry, or short stories or novels? Some of you will know and some of you are still trying to figure out why exactly you enjoy it. For the most of us, we write because it’s freeing. We write because of how little control we have over our world. Anxiety is based, to some degree, off of a lack of control, and writing poetry will free you of that. When you create art, you have full control. You can create exactly what it is that you want, and you can control who sees the art and who gets to say what, and how all of this effects you. This is freeing.
There will be people in this world who don’t understand what you do, or why you do it. They might look down on you or think less of you for what you write or create.
One thing about our society is that we often forget what a friend is. We look at the world, and movies and other forms of media and to other people that we’d like to interact with, and we base our friends on the wrong factors. Who has the most money? Who is the most popular? I would sure love to be friends with them.
But then we go and we create our art, and we are deathly afraid of what they might think. What if they make fun of me or hate me for what I’ve written?
The fact of the matter is that, if this person is truly a friend to you, they will not look down on you for anything you might have written. They will not stop being your friend, regardless of anything that you may have put into a poem. If this person does think less of you for what you’ve created, I have news. They were not a friend to you at all, and you are not at a loss if they walk out of your life because you do not need that type of person in your social group. Never be afraid to express your feelings, or your opinions. Create your art, and forget anyone who thinks less of you because you do so. At the root of everything, we are all people, and we are all healing from something. We have all been hurt and we can all benefit from letting out our emotion and reminding everyone what real people look like. Not airbrushed on a magazine, not acting on a TV, and not a perfect person with a perfect life and no emotion. We are writers, and we are painters and we are artists and we create. We create and express what’s bothering us about ourselves and about the world or anything and everything at all. And if someone thinks less of you, don’t waste your time trying to win them over. You will only keep a toxin soul in your life. Continue being yourself and continue writing whatever comes to your mind. Catharsis is crucial to your healing. If you keep secrets, if you let anxiety or whatever is bothering you stay in, you’re letting it win. Don't let them stop you from healing.
