Have you ever felt as if you were evolving into someone else after joining a sorority or fraternity? That your beliefs and faith were nowhere to be found? Time passes, meanwhile you begin to treat people differently. You are now so consumed by these new modifications to your personality, that you have lost sight of who you are. Finally, after neglecting your change in behavior, you are now the person you once said you would never become.
Greek life is a magical place. Although, once the beautiful world of Greek life is entered, it is imperative to never lose yourself. What do I mean by "lose yourself?" By allowing your character to negatively conform to this new group, while remaining oblivious. Annually, thousands of young men/women are potentially subjected to this phenomenon.
They may begin to effortlessly try to "fit in" to the sorority/fraternity stereotype. Then, they begin to slowly change their attire. Perhaps their attitude becomes a little too sassy (not the cool sassy, but the annoying sassy). Now, they begin to treat others with lesser value because their new, self-proclaimed social status allows them to do so because you know, they're Greek now (*hint the sarcasm*). I've seen many beautiful girls and guys evolve into something I never once thought they could become. Let me tell you, Greek life is much more than your sorority's obsession with Tory Burch handbags, overly excessive Kendra Scott jewelry, sassy attitudes, "Dad bods," extra large t-shirts, Polo shirts, PCB trashers, "shackers"...the list can go on and on and on.
People, can you not see the corruption happening to our beautiful Greek life community? Greek life was founded to help others in need, to promote being humble and successful, and to achieve things that would make your fraternity or sorority proud. Stop trying to "fit in," and be the real you. Your fraternity or sorority accepted you for the person you showed them you once were. They loved you! So why change who you are?
Find that girl in high school that once lit up when she overheard the word "Greek life."
Find the girl that once had so much faith in God.
Find the girl that aspired to change the world one day at a time.
Find the guy that once loved his girlfriend, and didn't feel the need to become a "frat daddy."
Find the guy that stopped a girl from abusing alcohol.
Find the guy that once said, "I hate it when guys treats girls like that."
Find/be the girl that said, "I will never become that."
Here I am, asking you: have you lost yourself? If you have, it is not too late. Prove to others what Greek life really stands for. Show them that you are still the same person with a little more spunk in you, because you're out there changing the world one person at a time.
Sincerely,
A girl who's changed
