On a Saturday night, I was working at my job and cleaning the store. Since the holiday seasons are quickly approaching, it was pretty busy. The store was a mess, and I was trying my best to straighten everything up, so my coworkers and I could get out on time. A few hours passed before a lady approached me for help.
"Do you know where your Thanksgiving plates are?" she asked.
It took me a few seconds to realize that we didn't have Thanksgiving plates, or anything related to the holiday. I politely told her that there was none, and she was just as surprised as I was. In the store there was already Christmas music playing, and as early as the first week of November, Christmas items were placed out to be bought.
November isn't a month about Thanksgiving anymore. It's about getting ready for Christmas, companies are putting all their Christmas items out, people are shopping for decorations, and getting presents. People need to slow down, and take one holiday at a time. Not only are people preparing for Christmas, but they are also waiting for great deals on Black Friday. Over the years it has now become "Black Thursday" too. Some companies open their stores on Thanksgiving, taking people away from their time with their family. Each year stores are opening earlier on Thanksgiving. Thankfully there are companies and people against opening on the holiday. This shows that people still care.
So, what about Thanksgiving?
It's about spending time with your family, relaxing, and having fun. Forget about Christmas, and remember what you are thankful for. Be thankful for all the wonderful people in your life, who helped you when you felt upset or trying to make the right decision. I know my family and friends are always there for me. Whenever I'm feeling down, they know how to make me forget about what I'm worried about. Be thankful for having a place to call home, and to have something to eat every day. Don't forget to be thankful about your education (even though it could be a struggle sometimes), I'm glad I figured out where I want to be in life with the help of great professors. The list could go on, there are many things to be grateful for. Not only should you be thankful on Thanksgiving, but have fun! Be with your family and spend time with them. Eat all the delicious food and not worry how many calories you just ate. Put all your worries aside, and just focus on what is in front of you.
It doesn't mean you don't have to be excited for Christmas or not go shopping on Black Friday. You can do all that, but remember that it's important to take a deep breath, and slow down. Everyone in society is always moving at a fast pace. Don't let Thanksgiving pass by without a second thought. Cherish the time you have with your family, eat as much as you want, have family traditions, and always be thankful for what you have.
