When people started making comments on my accent, I thought that they were the ones with an accent. My "i's" are extremely dragged out when I'm speaking, and I often have to repeat myself just so people can understand me. Sometimes people understand me and they just want me to speak so they can talk about my accent.
Everyone asks where I'm from after I open my mouth. Breaking the accent barrier with people from other countries is extremely difficult.
"I don't have an accent, you have an accent!" became a regular statement. I eventually figured out that I am the one with the accent and I've been fooled my entire life.
So ...
If you're like me, you should figure it out sooner or later. Most likely later, that you have an accent. And it is not a bad thing! God just blessed you with a little more twang than He did to the others. Soak up your "y'all's" "ain't's," double negatvies and long "i's" because that accent isn't going anywhere!
