My junior year of college is fast approaching and for many students, that's the prime year for studying abroad, but not for this student. Everyone always talks about the life-changing experiences they have and how important it is to take advantage of the opportunity, but all this urgency just makes me even less inclined to make the leap across the pond.
I mean if I'm being honest, one of the main concerns is of course the money. Sure, financial aid can cover some things, but let's just say I may not be the best of the best when it comes to students, so scholarships are a stretch, and even if I do get enough to cover tuition and room&board, what about travel expenses? Or spending money? LA isn't exactly the cheapest place on the planet, but it's also not as bad as others.
Aside from money, another issue I have is with the classes. I was a late bloomer in college and didn't declare a major until sophomore year. I also decided to add a minor that's about as far away as you can get from my main course of study. With that being said, I have a pretty strict course plan if I want to graduate on time. And when you go to countries that require you to know another language, your class pickings are somewhat slim.
On another note, when you decide to go to college 2,200 miles away from home, you understand just how hard distance is. Coming from the South and moving into the middle of downtown LA was like switching planets; I think I'm good on the culture shock for a little while.
However, I still love experiencing new cultures and traveling, so that's why I've done it my whole life. My first cross-country flight was when I was four years old and my first international one was just a year later. I have been greatly blessed with many opportunities to travel across the country and the world. I've already seen a lot, so taking a semester to go back to one of the places I've been doesn't make sense to me.
Also, why is my only opportunity to travel going to happen in college? I don't plan on going to graduate school right out undergrad--that's if I decide to even go--and I'm not on the "ring by spring" bandwagon. So what's holding me back from exploring the world after college? Everyone always talks about the real world and what life is going to be like after school. But what if I decide to take a year and travel? There are so many cost effective ways to do it, without having to go through your school's study abroad program.
Finally, if you've had your heart set on studying abroad, then do it! Don't let me discourage you. There's nothing wrong with that desire. I'm just here to represent the kids who may feel the pressure to take an opportunity that they just don't want right now. If that's you, then don't let people push you to a place you're not ready to go to; you'll get out in the world in due time. And with that, happy finals everyone!
