Through my minimal years of experience as a technical “woman” and prior to, I have both witnessed and experienced many an arrogant, rude, misogynistic, thoughtless, sexist male person. Whether it be my best friend's cheating boyfriend who just broke her heart for the second time, or my male high school classmates who took every chance they could to degrade women, there is a distinct difference between being a Guy and being a Man. As many of the people in my life already know, this is a theory I believe very strongly.
The Guy
So what constitutes a male individual being a Guy? Why, all those lovely adjectives I used earlier! A Guy does not respect women. A Guy can be rude and mean. A Guy starts fights and instigates problems. A Guy can be hot-headed and angry. A Guy can misuse and abuse the people in his life. A Guy doesn’t care about others very much.
But on a more serious note, a Guy cheats on you, or leads you on. A Guy makes jokes at your expense and doesn’t think you’re funny. A Guy hurts you in more ways than one.
A Guy is one of the worst things a male person can be. The only thing worse is a bad Guy, and that’s someone who does basically all of the things above and does them often.
And of course there are female equivalents to the Guy, but in my experience I’ve noticed a lot more Guys.
The Man
This is what I hope most male people eventually become, since it’s really pretty easy. What does a male person have to do to be a Man? Be a good person. Treat everyone, especially women, with respect. Be levelheaded and considerate. Be kind and sweet and nice to women and people. Don’t be rude and make thoughtless comments. Basically being a decent human being constitutes a male being a Man.
Specifically, Men might hold doors open, be frequent in their compliments, laugh at people's jokes, and smile often. They are people you want to be friends with and have long chats with about life. Men are people you want to talk about your bad days with and listen to theirs. Men are good, no-nonsense humans.
The Gentleman
This is the highest thing Guys and Men can aspire to be. The Gentleman is the Buddha of men. The Gentleman is someone who embodies everything that a Man is plus some. I can’t quite explain what the something more is since I myself have never met a Gentleman; I’m sure it is a very hard thing to attain and come by.
So to all the males of the world, try your hardest to be a tried and true Man. As they say in "Cinderella", have courage and be kind. To whomever said nice guys finish last, they are dead wrong. Be the nice Man and goodness will find you.
