You know what it is like to be a second choice. You know what it feels like to be at the will of someone else's attention. You know what it feels like to have never been picked first for sports, friends, or guys. To have not been invited, to be forgotten about. You were never the teacher’s favorite student or even a favorite friend. You were just kind of always there in the middle. If the world was black and white, you would be gray.
You spend years really wondering if anyone will miss you if you weren’t there. You feel invisible and have no idea what to do to try show yourself to people and always changing yourself to try to become someone’s first choice. You do the extreme because you think that it’s your fault if you aren’t first. But by doing these things, you lost yourself along the way.
You’ve seen people’s true colors but decided to paint another picture. You spent years blaming yourself because something did not work out. You planted the idea of waiting for someone to return to you once they’re done with whatever/whoever they are doing. You forced yourself to think of yourself as the second choice. You have allowed people mess with your emotions because they are unsure about theirs.
There comes a point where you need to stop crossing oceans for people who wouldn’t even jump puddles for you. You either choose me or loose me. I am a human, not a backup plan. Don’t let mixed signals fool you. Indecisive is a decision. When someone treats you like an option, help them narrow their choices by removing yourself from the equation.
I’m here today truly deciding that I am done with being someone’s second choice. I’m done with boys dancing on me and then ignoring me the next day. I’m done being passed a drink at the bar but passed up in the halls. I’m done to being a slave to my phone for a text back. I’m done with choosing someone who has to think twice about choosing me. I’m done thinking that I am not good enough.
We are all beautiful creatures that deserve the best. We need to stop seeking attention from others and accept ourselves. This is one of the hardest lessons in life to learn. All you have to do in life is to be yourself and live the story no one else can. Your story is unique just as you are. Be proud. Be confident. But most of all, be happy.
Never settle for being someone’s second choice or even first, choose to be someone’s only.
