Today Wifi is one of the most important things that a college student must have to complete most of their school work. This is especially true when you consider the fact that the majority of school assignments today require some kind of internet connection to complete and do your best on.
That being said, one would think that apartment buildings would ensure that if they promised residents Free Internet that it would work consistently and not go out multiple times for up to five days at a time because usually when a company promises to you provide with a service it is implied that the service will work well.
Sadly this does not seem to be true for my apartment building, although when the internet has been up it has worked well. My building has had four instances now where the internet in my unit has just stopped working completely and each time it has taken multiple days for them to fix even with me and my roommates putting in maintenance requests as soon as it stops working. I do not expect the internet connection to be perfect, but for a place that tries to appear state of the art the internet has been down right horrible.
The thing that has bothered me the most about the fact that the internet has been down so often this year is that I lived here last year and had no significant problems. What that suggests to me is that for some reason just the specific unit I am in has major internet problems or the building possibly switched to a worse internet provider because they were trying to save more money. Whichever it is they have a huge problem and do not seem like they care too much about fixing it.
Internet is not only something that my roommates and I have for fun stuff like watching Netflix. It is also necessary for stuff like turning in assignments through canvas, doing any assignment that requires online research and even writing articles for Odyssey such as this one.
That being said, I am currently in the study lounge of my building while writing this article because I an in the middle of one of those times where my internet is not working. Apparently, it will not be working until January 24th at the soonest. This is extremely aggravating because I have a few upcoming assignments that require constant internet access to complete and I would much rather be able to do those in the comfort of my own apartment, where it is easiest for me to focus on the task at hand and there are fewer distractions around to bother me.
By ignoring these frequent internet problems and not finding a permanent solution to them this building has essentially assured that neither me nor any of my roommates will be wanting to live there again in future. Even if they do find a way to fix this permanently there is no way I would consider living there unless they offered to do something the rest of this year like slightly decrease my rent for the rest of the lease.
By not providing stable internet to me and my roommates I feel as if they have not been providing what they agree to provide when I signed the lease agreement.
