Everyone knows it is work to own a pet! However, have you considered how much work it really is? It might surprise you how much work a pet might be if you have never had one, or only owned one as a kid. Dogs, cats, fish, and any pet really is more than feeding, playing and cleaning up after it! While it might be worth all the love and attention you get from your other species friend, I know I think it is, it still is a huge amount of work! We would do anything for our friends, but before you start taking care of a pet on your own for the first time, consider the following questions!
Do you have enough money to support your new friend?
Many new owners do not remember to think of the cost of taking care of a pet when buying or rescuing an animal. There is vet visits, food, toys, pet sitters, travel crates, and another cost that add up when you take in a new pet.
Do you have the time?
Pets of any kind need attention! Even if it is just a small beta fish! They need to have their areas clean, waste picked up, fed, and groomed. Many pets require you provide attention every day, such as cats and dogs. They need walks, playtime, and sometimes cuddle time to keep up their health.
Do you have enough space?
Some pets need more space than others, such as an active breed of dog might need more space than a fish.
Do you know enough about your new pet?
Do your research before getting a new pet! This way you can avoid feeding them something that is bad for them, or gives them a home remedy that hurts them!
Are you ready for a pet?
After considering all of the questions above, do you think you are ready to change your lifestyle to fit the needs of this pet? It is alright to wait or think more on this decision. People every day get pets and then realize they can not or do not want to care for them. This is hurtful not only to potential pet owner but the pet they have taken in. So please think about this before choosing to adopt a new family member.
If you do choose to take in a pet because you want to and are able, congratulations! This is one of the best decisions you can make! I have yet to come across a pet who has not make my life better in one way or another. Several have tested my patience and understanding, but that only caused my patience to grow and to learn more about how I could better care for my pets.
