FYI: Masks With Exhalation Valves Do NOT Prevent The Spread Of Covid-19

Not all masks are effective at keeping respiratory droplets within the mask.

I just recently went grocery shopping, and while I was in the parking lot, I noticed a couple that were walking past me wearing masks with exhalation valves. This raised my concern because last month, the CDC updated their website regarding masks with exhalation valves, and here's what they had to say:

"The purpose of masks is to keep respiratory droplets from reaching others to aid with source control. Masks with one-way valves or vents allow exhaled air to be expelled through holes in the material. This can allow exhaled respiratory droplets to reach others and potentially spread the COIVD-19 virus. Therefore, the CDC does not recommend using masks if they have an exhalation valve or vent."

Now, it would've been fine if that couple had been tested for Covid-19, and their results came back negative. But if they haven't been tested, then we don't know if they're asymptomatic or not, or during their incubation period before their symptoms show up.

Wearing a mask with exhalation valves goes against the whole point of wearing a mask. Masks are more for protecting other people rather than yourself, so if you don't know for certain that you are Covid-19 free, then you should refrain from wearing masks with exhalation valves and stick with a regular cloth or surgical mask.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register.
