Division In The Nation

Is there a way to solve the incoming violence?

Division In The Nation
Cody Huynh

When division grows, a nation dies. The growing division in our nation will cause our disintegration as a country and this polarization of our nation is leading to the lack of understanding between each other. A lack of care for the individual with an opposite stance is leading to increased hostility on many different fronts, from political to social to racial to religious. These prevalent and increased hostilities are landing on deaf ears. People have stopped listening to reason. They now lead by a simple code: do not upset me or you are in trouble. They no longer care about objectivity but rather everything is now subjective and it is all up to our interpretation. The direction of our nation is that of complete misunderstanding and misplaced thought. The people have not stopped moving but rather have shifted into a very dangerous thought process, where I am never wrong, you are wrong. People have stopped listening to reason and are now only listening to their emotions.

This lack of reasoning and facts is leading to several large divisions in our nation, mainly political, race, religion, sex, or sexual orientation, but any slightly controversial topic will be highly contentious in our culture. The lack of actually intelligent communication causes such a large fight. Rather than sit down and have a conversation and actually talk about what we feel and look each other in the eye, we take to the internet, blogging about how the other's point of view is pure evil and creating videos that hide the truth or cover statistics. The lack of actual information revealed about a subject is astounding. Getting our facts from Facebook, we take a stand on a issue. Rather than fact checking, we listen to whatever facts happen to support our side. This truth deficit is what is helping to fuel the fire that is the war for cultural approval, But all that this incessant screaming does is add to the noise, rather than actually solve a problem.

Have you ever studied the Cold War? This cultural atmosphere is the internet version of it. Both sides raise the stakes higher and higher, hoping that one side caves. From the slaughter of police to the slaughter of innocent black people, both sides just want to win. Left with only two options, everyone keeps fighting till the other side loses or until the side that you are on disintegrates. But, these are not the only options. We can also come together and communicate with each other. Having large scale debates and talks with the other side and fact checking on both sides will help to diffuse these cultural nuclear warheads that are armed and ready. Most of all, we need to generally care for our fellow human beings. When did we stop caring about their lives?

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
