If you love writing, television, or media production, then what I'm about to say will surely feed your interests.
Disney | ABC's television group offers a one-year writing program for those who apply and qualify. The program comprises many benefits, including the opportunity to become employees of Disney | ABC’s television group! On top of earning a provisional salary of roughly $50,000 for the year, members are introduced to top literary representatives, producers, and executives. During the first month of the program, participants go through training designed to enhance their skills within the TV production industry. Throughout the process writers have access to one of the greatest mentors in the field and are steered to achieve success in their next career. Several graduates from the program moved on to writing and producing for successful shows including Breaking Bad, Pretty Little Liars, Mad Men, and plenty more. Here's what alumni, Bryan Oh (producer/writer of Vampire Diaries), had to say about his experience:
“The Writing Program introduced me to a number of fantastic writers and executives. The Creative Talent Development team guided me while I was in the program and they have become invaluable mentors. This program jump-started my writing career, and it continues to impact my career in a positive way.”
Sounds like it can't get any better right? Wrong. The program resides in Los Angeles, California. So, on top of working for Disney/ABC, pursuing what you love, and developing great connections, participants reside in the beautiful LA.
As soon as I read about the amazing opportunity, I was committed to start preparing my application. I called my mom and unapologetically told her I would be moving to Los Angeles. Unfortunately, the more I investigated, the further my reach became. Each year, the program selects roughly eight out of the 1,300 applicants. After doing my research, I found out that almost every considered applicant had years of experience in TV production and screenplay writing. On top of talent, Disney | ABC’s industry looks for guaranteed experience, expertise, and professionalism. Although this realization minimized my excitement and eagerness to apply straight out of college, I’ll always keep the opportunity in mind. Who knows, maybe one day my dream will come true.
