Discovering The Best Underground Clubs In South Florida (Part 2) - Treehouse
Speaker Box Productions

First, I would like to thank everyone who is following my magical journey, as I discover the best underground clubs in South Florida. This week I dropped by the Treehouse to catch the legendary Dave Seaman and see what the Speaker Box Crew is all about.

If you never been to the Treehouse, you might easily miss the entrance. Here's a tip: look for the wooden owl sitting on the beam. Treehouse is typically open three days a week (Thursday through Saturday and stays open til 5 a.m.) . I have witnessed this club at full capacity during The Winter Music Conference but was pleasantly surprised to see over a 100 people to come out on Thursday night and stayed dancing until the end. Most people I spoke with are locals and regularly come to dance at this fun spot. The club has two rooms and they both have an amazing sound system. The lighting system is kept down to a minimum to give it a true underground vibe. It takes special skills of a lighting technician not to over do it and create a perfect atmosphere. During the season and special events like Art Basel, MMW, and WMC, Treehouse is always sold out. Un-Mute is doing an amazing job by bringing big talent to entertain everyone throughout the year.

While Kike Roldan and Atomyard warmed up the room with some amazing tunes, I had a conversation with Bulgaria native Kora Noir who is residing in Miami and one of the DJs from Speaker Box Productions.

Q: What were your company's humble beginnings like?

A: Our founders Kike Roldan and Atomyard have been playing locally for about nine years before forming our group. It feels like a family because we already spend so much time at events. Sharing our vision was what brought us all together.

Q:What is the vision for the Speaker Box Production?

A: All the partners in our group are local DJs/Producers and we are all very passionate about underground music and contributing to our local scene. Although we do some events in local clubs, our vision is to think outside the box and do events out in the open. We are known for the Infamous CASTAWAY Island Party and SUNDOWN JAMS Boat Parties! We will continue to curate more fun, exclusive events in the near future.

Q: What is the SPKRBX family is all about?

A: We are a collective of young creative passionate artists. Music is our life. We DJ, produce music, put together events. We love what we do and have fun in the process.

Back in the club, the energy was elevating as Dave Seaman took over. You can feel the excitement in the air and everyone was ready for the journey. I have to be honest-- I did not hear Dave in a while. However, the music speaks for itself and I found myself dancing along with everyone in the room. Luckily, after a brilliant three hours set, I was able to pull Dave aside for a quick conversation.

Q: When did you realize you wanted to be a DJ?

A: I was around 14 when I made my decision that wanted to be a DJ. It was way before it became popular and cool. I loved the whole process and looked at it as an art form. Luckily for me, it was an amazing time as the dance culture was being born and it helped me to become an international artist.

Q: With so many years in the scene and playing big festivals, why do you still choose to DJ at an underground spot like Treehouse?

A: I’ve been coming to Miami for over 20 years and have many fun memories. This club in particular, has a special meaning for me. In the beginning of the 90s I held a monthly residency here at the old Groovejet. I also played many other venues as well as Ultra but coming back here, always brings me back. I do it for the music and the fans. On a Thursday night, I don’t expect to see too many passing tourists. After all these years I still get a rush from playing intimate clubs.

Q: Analog vs digital, what’s your preference?

A: I personally can play on any format. However, I prefer not to bring my computer to the gig. It takes away from connecting with a crowd. Two turntables or CDJs works for me. I just don’t want to get stuck browsing through a playlist and enjoy the moment. Everyone is different and it really doesn’t matter how artist manipulates the sound. As long as you can rock the crowd and give it your all, people on the dancefloor will appreciate it.

Q: You have accomplished so much in over two decades, what is it like to start over with your new record label?

A: I finished Audio Therapy around 2011. We had an amazing run but it was managed with the old structure based on the 90s vinyl era. I got into it to make music but in time we were losing money and I had to recognize it and move on. With Selador Recordings the timing was right and together with my partner Steve Parry we share the same vision in style and direction. A lot has changed in the industry but our passion to deliver top quality music put us on the map in no time.

Q: How different is it to run a label in the new digital era?

A: There is not a lot of money to be made selling music online but we are all in it for different reasons. We love to make and share music with other DJs and play it out on dancefloors around the world. We are in it for the whole creative process and love all of it. From choosing the people to work with, to design, marketing and everything in between.

Q: Do you have a particular sound for your label?

A: Not really. We both have a broad spectrum of sounds when it comes to style. When I play out, I like deeper, more melodic and some techno. When we do our releases, we like to cover all genres with the remixes to make sure there is something for everyone.

Q: Does it feel like a family or you work with different producers all the time?

A: It does feel like a family. It also feels like we building a little gang. When we got strength in numbers we get more momentum. Besides our regular favorites like Robert Bobicz, QUIVVER, Habischman, Third Son and many others, we always look for the next stars on the rise. The only way to grow is to branch out and give more opportunities.

Q: Speaking about family, with your busy schedule how do you manage time for personal life?

A: It’s tough but I do my best to balance and spend quality time with my wife and three kids. I’m traveling every weekend around the world but I’m always back to share special moments with my family during the week. It’s been like this when I met my wife and my kids were born into this, so it’s nothing new and we make it work.

Thanks to everyone I had a pleasure meeting and speaking with. I had an amazing time at the Treehouse and definitely recommend to come check them out throughout the year and not just during the holidays. There is a reason why so many international artists still come down here to play. The energy in the room is charged with love and underground music.

With love,

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
