“For Lang, I write because you exist.”
"Dirty Pretty Things," written by Michael Faudet, is an exquisitely written romance novel reiterating the cobwebbed aspects of being in love, which we tend to forget over time. This poetry-focused novel is 265-pages of pure enchantment.
Some will hear the word “poetry” and are immediately turned off because poetry is very difficult to understand. Faudet is able to communicate to his readers through clear-cut, yet incredibly complex metaphorical language. His word choice is simple but intricately placed.
When reading this novel, one will not have to analyze every sentence to achieve an ever-so-slight understanding of what it could possibly mean. The message Faudet attempts to exemplify throughout his poems is well defined and easy for everyone to understand.
The author places language around metaphors of love and lust in order to depict the relationship between himself and his lover, Lang Leav. “The simplicity and love between the two characters is quite inspiring,” said Alyssa Lishman of Warrior Magazine. This erotic novel is not overbearingly erotic. Faudet’s words are full of lust and are debauched, yet so sugary and appropriate - enough to fascinate the most innocent of minds.
When reading I became taken back to memories of a distant day once lived. Two-poems in and I could not put down the book; I finished it in one 45 minute sitting. Now of course, it is almost impossible to grasp every detail in one sitting, which is why I read it another three times. I still return to the novel every once in a while for a smile and some goose bumps, how womanly of me. I really found myself within the pages of the book.
Faudet writes with a cool composure- a sort of melancholy tone. It is evident he is not trying too hard; his diction is fluent and effortless. There is something so mesmerizing about his twisted mind.
As a fellow creative writer, I truly appreciate how Faudet doesn’t create an insufferable riddle throughout his writing similar to some authors. Poetry is one of the most beautiful forms of writing and it means to be understood.
Almost everyone (excluding children) should be able to relate to "Dirty Pretty Things" because it encompasses properties of what makes us human. The novel takes it’s readers back to the most vulnerable of moments and helps us realize even the smallest of instances should not be taken for granted. This novel reminds us of a past, present or future love that makes or made our lives worth living.
“I hope you enjoy Dirty Pretty Things as much as I have. For Michael and I, it has been a labour of love.” Lang Leav
Dirty Pretty Things is a book I did not want to end. Luckily, Michael Faudet is working on his second book, a modern day fairytale with dark, gothic undertones.
This novel can be purchased on Amazon for $11.87.
