What I Learned From Living In A Very Politically Opinionated Household

I grew up in a home that was very politically oriented, and I could not be more thankful to my parents for that.

The first thank you I want to give is for always making sure I was up to date on the current issues and how I felt about them. My parents are far leaning right wing republicans, but if I had a differing view point on an issue, they always made me explain why I believed the way I did, they accepted my points and moved on. I always had a grip on the topic at hand, and I was taught to gather all the facts before deciding on it.

The second thank you I’m giving is for always making sure I didn’t let the opinion of others sway my own. I cannot say thank you enough to my parents for always teaching me to stay strong on my beliefs, even when they did not coincide with their ideas. Now I’m not saying we had debates on every topic in my house, but I grew up in a much more progressive time than they did, and so differing ideas is to be expected in teenagers and adults.

The final thank you is centered on my parents teaching me to believe in myself, and my ability to choose wisely. I am happy to be able to say that I no longer jump to conclusions as often (like we all do, let’s not kid ourselves).

I appreciate late-night newscasts, presidential debates, and heated discussions in the kitchen; however, the thing I am most thankful for from having parents with strong opinions is that I learned to form my own opinions and back them with facts. I learned that it is more than ok to disagree with someone else, but only if you are prepared to explain why you believed the way you do. Lastly, I learned that being open minded is the most important skill to have when you are very opinionated. As long as you are willing to listen to someone, they will be willing to listen to you, even if that person is your parent.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
