I’ve enjoyed video games since being introduced to the NES in the early 90s. Since then, I’ve played a wide range of genres on a plethora of platforms. I’ve found joy in (nearly) all of them.
Unlike my parents, I never viewed video games as a time-waster. They can be a safe place you’re familiar with, a work of art that trained and skilled people spent hundreds of hours making, and be a place to create and keep friendships alive.
Although, as I’ve said before, most of the time parents tend to know what they’re talking about. And in regards to "diep.io," I’d have to say their thought of video games being a time-waster is correct.
Although what I say next may not make sense to you, it's what I believe. Just because something is a time-waster doesn't mean it's a waste of time.
"Diep.io" isn’t a flashy game. Its graphics are two-dimensional. The colors are lackluster. There isn't any sound. There isn't any chat feature. But it's still so captivating.
You don't need an account to play. Just visit the website, type a name you want, and press enter. There isn't anything easier.
The objective is to be at the top of the leader board. You get there by gaining points. The easiest way to get points is by destroying shapes on the field -- square, triangles, and pentagons.
You can shoot or ram into the shapes to destroy them. Shooting them is generally a bit slower than simply ramming them. But ramming will also do damage to you, which is something you need to look out for when running from players who've upgraded.
You start as a basic tank with all the possible skills set to zero, and one barrel. As you level up, you get points to upgrade your skills (such as max health, movement speed, bullet power, etc). Upon reaching level 15, you can choose a new class of tank, or choose to stay the same.
Each level 15 class is very different. There's the sniper, which can shoot bullets further and faster with an increased field of view; the flank tank, which has a barrel on the front back of the tank; a twin that has two barrels side by side; and a machine gun that has a wide barrel that shoots smaller, faster bullets in large quantities. Or you can stay the same and keep upgrading your skills.
There are two more levels where you can choose the class again, 30 and 45. The new classes relate to what you choose as your last one. For example, a sniper can become a necromancer, and a twin can become and octotank.
My favorite is the hidden class. By choosing to stay the normal tank at level 15, and assuming you survive until you're level 30, you can choose to become a smasher. This tank is unique, as it has no guns (nor does its level 45) upgrades.
If you want to try this out yourself, I highly recommend it. I also recommend just messing around and having fun. That's what's games are all about anyway.
