Delaware: A State Divided

Are northern and southern Delaware even the same state?

Delaware: A State Divided
Wikipedia

One area code, three counties, two senators and one house rep. The first state is small, everyone in it can tell you that much, but this small state will surprise you. It may only take less than two hours to get from Claymont to Delmar, but that doesn’t mean anything here. These two cities could be on different planets, because they share little to no similarities. This is one small state, with very distinct divisions within. There isn’t really much that northern and southern Delaware share.

So Del is a different area depending on whoever you ask. Some may tell you that it is anything south of the C&D canal. Others will say the line where Kent becomes Sussex County. Aside from these boundary disputes, southern Delaware can be united by some similarities only found down there. The small town “everyone knows everyone” feeling you get from walking into Walmart with your parents who just will not stop running into people. The dreadful feeling of having to go on the highway on Thursday through Monday during the summer months. The deep sense of pride from seeing a public place sporting hometown high school memorabilia. Sure, every teenager will grow up saying there is nothing to do in slower lower, but these teenagers also live for late night “Bees” runs after a basketball win, or Senior Skip day at Cape Henlopen State Park. Maybe everything seems a little slower down here, hence the nickname, but that sure does make it a lot more relaxing. There sure is nothing quite like coming home from a vacation, seeing a farm and just thinking “Oh... I’m definitely home.”

There may or may not be some people who consider everything north of the St. Georges bridge to be “Wilmington.” This area, while is not just comprised of Wilmington, basically contains the Wilmington snapchat geotag anywhere that is not the University of Delaware campus. NorDel can easily be described as the hub of private schools and the child of Philadelphia. The place where traffic is a daily event you can join right on I-95. I’m not sure you can turn your head for even just a second without seeing the Dupont name up there, and if you do not know what Astra Zeneca is have you even been to New Castle County? There’s something comforting about having Main Street in Newark, the Riverfront and Alapocas State Park all in your backyard, and the northerners make sure you realize it.

There are a few moments where you can find a connection among this entire state. Everyone lives for a Wawa run in these parts (while there is a slight debate over Wawa vs. RoFo, we all know the true winner), and even if you do not know him personally, you have some feeling of pride knowing that our very own Donte Divincenzo is now a National Champ (go ‘Cats!) Yep, Firefly Music Festival is right here is good ole Del and we never get tired of mentioning at least one celebrity who was raised in the 302. High school basketball is something we all take very seriously, and we all know the name Salesianum, but the opinions on that topic may differ depending on who you are. Either way, we are all incredibly proud and a little competitive, but I guess it’s just a Delaware thing.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
