You were not a kid growing up in the 2000's if you didn't sneak into the living room to flick on Degrassi: The Next Generation against your parents' wishes. One of TeenNick's highest rated shows, Degrassi tackled many topics teenagers could possibly deal with during their transition to adulthood. Challenges include, but are not limited to, struggles with friendships, sexuality, self- harm/image, domestic violence, teen pregnancy, and racism.
Degrassi holds a special place in my heart, as it taught me that everyone has a story and that it is never beneficial to quickly judge a book by its cover. The show constantly explores the negative aspects of a teenage life and did not sugarcoat stories which allowed viewers to see not everything has a happy ending. The cast of Degrassi: The Next Generation became icons for the struggles their characters endured and it's nice to see where they are now.
Jimmy Brooks AKA Aubrey "Drake" Graham
Yes-- it's the same Drake we all know and love! Before teaming up with stars like Rihanna to create straight fire, Drake got his start rapping on Degrassi as Jimmy Brooks; the former basketball star turned musical artist after a horrible accident changed his life. I won't spoil what happened if you don't already know!
Drake has since earned 3 Juno Awards, 1 Grammy, 6 BET awards, and has set several Billboard records.
Adam Torres AKA Jordan Todosey
Those of you avid Disney channel watchers may recognize Jordan Todosey from her role as Lizzie McDonald in Life With Derek. After her time on Disney channel, Jordan moved to Degrassi to portray female-to-male transgender student Adam Torres. The storyline highlights what transgender students have to endure in high school, whether it be bullying, self-image, and troubles in love.
Jordan Todosey won the 2011 Gemini Award for best performance in a children's or youth program or series for her portrayal of Adam. Todosey currently has a recurring role in the Canadian science fiction drama Between.
Manuela "Manny" Santos AKA Cassie Steele
Cassie Steele beautifully portrays the typical teenage girl struggling to find herself throughout high school. Manny is best friends with Emma and the two frequently disagree on many topics such as Manny's perceived promiscuity and what matters to each of them, but the two have an ever-lasting friendship that stays alive until the exit of both of their characters from the show.
Cassie Steele is an accomplished singer with 2 albums, 2 EPs, and many other singles under her belt. She is an alternative singer that I consider to greatly stand for women empowerment.
