In preparation for the release of Reputation on November 10th, I am creating an Odyssey series about Taylor Swift until the release date. You're welcome in advance.
15. Picture to Burn
This song gets 15th and last place because of the controversy of the line "I'll tell mine that you're gay". And, even though Taylor Swift later one apologized for using the term "gay" as a slur and changed the lyric, it showed that she had a long career of scandal ahead of her.
14. The Outside
There is nothing wrong with "The Outside", but it lacks the emotional connection of other songs on this album about the feeling of being lost. It is also hard to feel bad for a sixteen year old with a multi-platinum album.
13. I'm Only Me When I'm With You
This song sends a questionable message to young girls that we need a man and love in order for us to feel like we can truly be ourselves. She talks about sacrificing flight and being happy for love - which is very bad advice.
12. Stay Beautiful
This is another questionable song where Taylor talks about how she only feels beautiful when Corey tells her about her beauty. It also talks about waiting around on a guy to finally decide she is beautiful enough for him. A mysterious guy named "Corey" does not seem worthy of being the highlight of your day everyday.
11. A Place in This World
This song is about trying to figure out life and what the best path for you. It is about feeling lonely even though other people are in the same position as you. I can hear the song playing from my ipod shuffle on the middle school bus feeling very ~angsty~.
10. A Perfectly Good Heart
This song is just a pity party about your first heartbreak. And, while it does not have any remarkable moments, it is still a solid introduction into Taylor's world of break up songs.
9. Cold As You
"Cold As You" depicts a verbally abusive relationship and how hard they are to leave. It is hard hitting and her first attempt at exploring tough subjects. Her lyrics are brutally honest and the song is definitely underrated.
8. Tim McGraw
I debated on the ranking of this song for quite a while. But, it is a song that gives everyone who listens severe nostalgia. And, it is the first EVER Taylor music video which keeps it at a solid #8.
7. Teardrops on My Guitar (Radio Single)
Stay with me here. "Teardrops on My Guitar" is a true masterpiece, but the radio version kills it. The pop version is much quicker paced and does not make you feel like the beat is being dragged painfully slow.
6. Invisible
This is the song I listened to after every middle school dance when the boy I liked did not dance with me. The extreme desperation to be noticed by a boy and proclaim that you're in love with him is so Taylor it physically hurts me. This is peak Taylor ~angst~ on the album.
5. Should've Said No
This song is the ultimate revenge song on an ex that cheated on you. Taylor knows her worth and is going to make sure every jerk who breaks her heart knows what he is missing out on.
4. Tied Together With a Smile
Taylor writes this song about mental illness and depression. She notes how hard it is to keep up with society's expectations of you. She even furthers a quite progressive thought that "just because you seem happy, it does not mean you are".
3. Our Song
This song is adorable and shows how free spirited and innocent Taylor used to be. #RIPOldTaylor Fun fact: This is the only old Taylor from the album that made it in Taylor's LWYMMD music video.
2. Teardrops on My Guitar (Pop Version)
This song is beautiful. It is catchy and so relatable. And, goes to show pop Taylor is much better than country Taylor.
1. Mary's Song (Oh My My My)
Taylor wrote her full first album based on what she perceived love to be like. And, who did not have a fantasy of falling in love and marrying their childhood friend. This fairytale is too pure for words.
