Let’s face it: this fall, phones are making a comeback in a big way. At least on the radio. Here are some of the best phone call-themed pop songs of all time.
9: "Call Me When You’re Sober" (Evanescence)
We’re going to kick off the list with the mid-2000s post-grunge band Evanescence. Drunk phone calls? Teenage angst? Screaming? It has everything! I’m going to intentionally leave out the mention of “Bring Me to Life” because none of us need to go there again.
8: "I Just Called to Say I Love You" (Stevie Wonder)
Everyone needs some Stevie in their life. This throwback R&B slow jam is sure to get everyone and their mothers vibing to the beat. Mostly their mothers, though.
7: "Kiss Me Thru the Phone" (Soulja Boy)
This is on the list purely on the virtue that it’s pure middle school nostalgia. And who didn’t call that number (678-999-8212)? Long-distance romance is tough. Soulja Boy, tell ‘em.
6: "Ring, Ring" (ABBA)
A shameless guilty pleasure. If sad Swedish people waiting on a phone call from that special someone doesn’t get you going, you can leave.
5: "Payphone" (Maroon 5)
An annoying song from an annoying album, yes. But this Whiz Khalifa-featured hit dominated the airwaves in 2012. It would just be wrong not to talk about it.
4: "Telephone" (Lady Gaga & Beyoncé)
When two pop icons poison a diner full of innocent patrons, it catches your attention. Lady Gaga and Beyoncé just want to do their thing in the club. Why are their men getting all fussy about it? I’m at least 80 percent they’re who "Hotline Bling" is about.
3: "Call Me Maybe" (Carly Rae Jepsen)
HEY I JUST MET YOU. AND THIS IS CRAZY. BUT HERE’S MY NUMBER. SO CALL ME MAYBE! Never live down this song. My only question is when Carly is going to call up her career. Hasn’t it gone missing?
2: "Hotline Bling" (Drake)
The song that inspired this list. Ignoring the fact that Drake is trying to get in the way of a girl having the time of her life, we’re going to be hearing this until we die. Let’s just hope he gets that album out before then.
1: "Hello" (Adele)
Hail the Queen.
