10 Things That Define Me, Aside From The Number On A Scale

There is so much more to me than what I weigh.

I'm not sure if you're like me, but sometimes when I step onto a scale, I tend to step off feeling like crap. As those numbers inch up, and the increase in ounces turns to an increase in pounds, I step off of the scale feeling guilty about that piece of cheesecake, that plate of pasta, or any other unhealthy food that I've recently eaten.

After I stepped off the scale at my last doctor's appointment, I came to the realization that I shouldn't let numbers on a scale be an identifier for myself— my value as a human being is not defined by what the scale says I weigh. I realized that there are so many things that I can be defined by. While I'm still working on bettering myself and getting my body to a healthy place, I decided that I needed to make a list of things that define me.

If you have been/are currently in the same kind of body negativity mindset that I was in, maybe making a list of things that define you would be beneficial to you, too. Here is my list of 10 things that define me, aside from the number on a scale:

1. My smile.

I've been told that I have a killer smile and that my smile is one of the best physical attributes that I have.

2. My eyes.

I've been told that I have beautiful green eyes, and that they're an incredibly striking physical feature.

3. My long, blonde hair.

I'm one of those women who pride themselves in taking really good care of their hair, and I've been told that my long, blonde hair is another one of my best physical attributes.

4. My ability to walk into a room and connect with people.

This one is a little more obscure than the first two, but I know that I have the ability to walk into a room and immediately connect with and strike up a conversation with just about anyone.

5. My kindness.

I'm the kind of person that will take time out of their day to check up on someone who might be having a bad day, or give a stranger directions, or even go the extra mile for a friend in need.

6. My strength.

I've been through my fair share of challenging, downright traumatic events in life, but I think one of my defining characteristics is the strength that I possess. I've taken on the philosophy of putting one foot in front of the other and soldiering on, and I love that quality about myself.

7. My music taste.

Being an aspiring singer/songwriter has taught me the value of a well-delivered and well-written song. I have great taste in music and I'm able to recognize when a song is incredibly well-written. (I'm usually jealous of the well-written songs because I wish that I had written them.)

8. My movie taste.

When it comes to movies, I tend to go for the ones that were made before my time. I love '80s movies, and I love older black-and-white movies as well.

9. My signature red lipstick.

There are days when I don't feel like wearing any makeup at all, (see my article titled, "I Don't Have To Wear Makeup To Be Beautiful"), and then there are days when I don't leave my house without lipstick on. Red lipstick is my go-to color, and it really accentuates my blonde hair and the green in my eyes.

10. My leather jacket.

Whenever it's cold outside, my go-to fashion staple is my solid black leather jacket. My leather jacket is actually my favorite piece of clothing that I own, and I always feel like a rockstar every time I have it on.

So, regardless of the number on a scale, I know my worth. I'm worth more than what the numbers on a scale read, and I hope that you know you're worth more than what you weigh, too. I hope that this article gives you a little perspective, makes you believe in your own worth, and encourages you to take a step forward in the direction of self-love.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
