"HA]a! What are you going to do with a major in Communication?"
"Oh my gosh, Comm majors never have any school work!"
"Comm majors are so stupid."
These quotes have either been directly said to me or I've heard them around campus. Chances are if you're a Communication(s) major of any sort, you've heard similar words too.
Whether you're studying journalism, television, radio, advertising, media, creative design, public relations, theory, pre-law, etc., you are labeled as a stereotypical Comm major. You're sometimes made to feel worthless or unimportant when compared to other majors at your university. Sometimes, even your friends and family put you down. Yes, even Comm majors make fun of the stigma, but partially because of how ridiculous it is.
First to all the haters out there, there is a difference between a Communication major and a Communications major. Typically a Communication major studies how information is transmitted between people using writing, symbols, verbal and non-verbal cues; It's quite literally the study of communication.
Add the S and typically you're talking about the technology people use to send and receive messages and the tactics used to execute a strategic campaign. These are loose interpretations, and while there is a difference, I don' think you can have one without the other. I'm a Strategic Communication major with a focus in advertising, and if I didn't understand how two individuals communicate at the most basic level, I wouldn't understand how to effectively reach them in an integrated marketing campaign. The work hand in hand to support the most basic human interaction on a variety of levels.
In other words, you're important, regardless of what part of the communication(s) spectrum you fall on. First, props to you for following your passion despite the negative connotations the major has. Some people aspire to be nurses and doctors, and that's amazing. Others aspire to be journalists and strategist, and that's equally amazing too.
Next, be proud of all the hard work you accomplish. Yes, hard work from a communication(s) major seems impossible, but it's quite frequent. While some people are in labs or learning each bone in the hands, we're writing endless papers and creating major presentations. We all chose what we enjoyed, and at the end of the day, that's what matters.
But Comm isn't just about writing. Comm is full of research and analysis. We pursue grammatical perfection in all we do. We strategize when working on campaigns and search for compelling, accurate news for tv and newspapers. We have a strict code of ethics to follow and unique writing styles we must utilize in our work deepening on the project. We design logos and create commercials. And, believe it or not we actually use math whether analyzing quantitative research, buying media space or calculating ROI.
So what are we going to do with a major in Communication(s):

Imagine a world without the nightly news, Entertainment tonight, all our social media platforms, magazines, movies, radio, etc. Without these mediums and the people behind them, we'd essentially be left in the stone age.
Comm majors support innovation and progress, and if we're not creating it, we're the reason you know about it.
So next time you try to tear us down, keep in mind that without us, the world wouldn't get to know about all the amazing things you other majors do.
