Debunking the Myths about New Jersey

As a Jersey Girl I feel like people immediately create this perception about who we are. But the reality is, not everything people think about those of us from New Jersey is true.

Debunking the Myths about New Jersey

Here are some of the misconceptions and the truth about us Jersey Girls.

1. The whole state is dirty, smells bad, and is crime ridden.

While I must admit there are some places that might not be the best areas, parts of New Jersey are beautiful suburban towns. Northern Jersey is filled with middle to upper class families. Which leads me to my next misconception.

2. Everyone from New Jersey is from the same type of lifestyle.

This might sound a little weird, but essentially people do not realize the New Jersey is broken up into three areas. There’s North, Central and South Jersey, and there is a clear distinction between all three sections. It might be hard to explain to someone not from New Jersey, but anyone from the state will tell you how different the sections are. If you want some more details about the distinction between the people in New Jersey, there are plenty of maps on Google that break it down in a little more detail.

3. We all talk with a Jersey/Italian accent.

No matter what part of the country you are in, there are always people with different accents. We might say words differently or call it “soda” instead of “pop”, but it does not mean we all talk like The Real Housewives of New Jersey. Shows like this and Jersey Shore make us all seem like the same Italian obnoxious families but it is not true at all. In fact, many of the cast members of Jersey Shore were not even from New Jersey. However, we do make some of the best Italian cuisine if you are coming for a visit.

4. We all dress like Snooki.

Yet another reason that show gave us a horrible reputation: not everyone from New Jersey dresses in clothes that do not fit and show way more skin then necessary. Before that show aired, I do not think I ever saw someone with a “poof” or essentially wear a bra out. It started after the infamous MTV show.

5. Everyone in New Jersey is a horrible and aggressive driver.

I’m not going to argue with this one because I must admit, we are pretty bad drivers in general. But I do think it is not just a New Jersey thing and it is more a Northeast thing.

6. The Jersey Shore is gross and dirty.

For those of you who do not know, Seaside is not the only shore town on the Jersey shore that people go to. Once you move past the slightly unpleasant boardwalk there, you come across some of the most beautiful shore town in New Jersey. These multi-million dollar homes built right along the shore. It’s amazingly beautiful and if you think everywhere on the shore is exactly like where Snooki got arrested, you are completely wrong and should pay a visit soon. Places like Spring Lake and Avalon are breath taking.

7. We are all obsessed with Bruce Springsteen.

THIS IS 100% TRUE! He’s the boss and we all know it. If you are not convinced by that, here’s a video from his Super Bowl performance for you to be persuaded about how great of a performer/singer he is.

I hope everyone now understands that New Jersey is not as awful as people make it seem. I’m sure we can all find flaws in whatever states you live, but for some reason New Jersey just gets made fun of the most. We are wonderful people and you should take a trip there to see the beautiful coastlines and enjoy some great food.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
