Salutations Floridians,
Let's put down our oranges, hold off on putting on our sunscreen for now, and change into our swimwear later because it is time to talk about driving. Though I have only been a legal Florida driver for about 3 years now, I have been exposed to the most insane driving tactics and I refuse to hold my tongue anymore. I am not too sure what driving is like in other states; however, I sure do know that if we all took our driver's test again, 86.73% (I completely made that statistic up) would not receive their licenses back. There are three trends I have noticed in my 3 years and let's try and end them together.
Trend 1: Driving below speed limit!
Listen, I get it. Cops are very sneaky around each corner and I completely respect your option to follow the law to the point, but if we're being honest... some of us have places to be and we cannot be at those places if you are driving at the speed of a 79 year old slug. Maybe I'm trying to pass you, maybe my wife is in labor, or maybe I just really have to drop a horrid creature off in the nearest restroom facility, you just never know. So let's try to go the speed limit so we can both get to our places at a quicker pace, safely of course.
Trend 2: NOT USING A BLINKER!
Okay, this is something I truly feel like I should not have to say. As I said, I've been on the road for three years, so maybe I just haven't grown weary of flipping that little handle of the side of my steering wheel yet, but come on guys! We do remember cars have this feature, right? WARN ME WHAT IS GOING ON! I promise you that rear-ending you is not on my to-do list for the day. When you're turning into the next plaza or neighborhood, just let me know so I know to slow down and all will be well between us.
Trend 3: Not checking your blind spot.
I can promise you that your "intuition" is not enough! I am probably in the midst of passing you in that exact moment and watching you intentionally attempt to slide swipe my car makes me kind of want to pull you over and give you a ticket myself. Even if you find yourself ending Trend 2 (see above), you still have more steps to do before you just swing on over into another lane. What? I have to check for other people on the road too? Driving is so exhausting, right?
So those are just merely 3 of the hundreds of habits I beg to Florida drivers to end. I just want to get to and from Chipotle safely, man. Together, we can drive better and not be such a laughing stock to the rest of the country. Who's with me?
