Dear White People

America Was Great When?

Dear White People,

Let me first start off by saying that this letter is not to all of you because I am very aware that not all white people are bad. I am also aware that not all white people hate black people and not all of you love Trump. However, there is a serious problem within our society on how black people are viewed and to be quite honest it has gotten more than just a little out of hand.

1. You Have No Reason To Fear Us

Our skin color should not indicate to you that we are a threat, because in most cases we are not. There are so many cases where a cop has killed an unarmed black man because "I feared for my life". How can you fear for your life if the man is unarmed? Or do you fear us because you did not take time out to get to know us? It is very easy to fear the unknown, but again, you did not really try...did you?

2. All Lives Matter

Of course they do! Nobody said that they didn't. We have however seen many cases of black men and women being targeted. So at this point BLACK LIVES MATTER. That is not to say that your life is any less important than ours, nor is it to say that you just don't matter. What it does indicate is that our lives as black people are in danger and you are doing nothing to help by saying that "All Lives Matter". Saying "All lives Matter" is like going to a breast cancer walk and talking about lung cancer. Of course lung cancer matters too, of course all cancers can lead to death, and of course you're open to your own opinion. The fact here is that your brothers, sisters, and fathers are not the ones being killed for "fear" of their skin color.

3. When Was America Ever Great?

When you stripped us of our rights and shipped us here? When we were building your country from the ground up? When you set our churches on fire? When you killed our black men? When was America ever great? You do realize that we didn't ask to be brought to America right? If I am not mistaken Blacks, African Americans (or whatever you want to call us) were brought to America against their will, packed into ships like sardines and used to build this oh so great country you call America, so now that you have everything you want you want us gone? I am not very sure that is how this is going to work. Nice try though.

We find so many problems in America because nobody wants to be honest and nobody wants to take responsibility for what has gone so wrong. Which I realized while watching Trump so easily blame Secretary Clinton and President Obama for everything that is wrong so far. When in reality President Obama has fixed quite a bit since he has been in office.

But what do I know right? I'm just an English Major at an HBCU

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
