Dear Smalls...

I love being your Biggie, Smalls.

Dear Smalls...

Last week, my little Madelyn McLay wrote an article titled “Dear Biggie” and inspired me to write an article in response.

As big sisters, we know the struggle and stress and financial anxiety when it comes to getting a little. The planning starts fairly soon after you yourself become a little. Ever since I got my big last year, I wanted the most perfect little. I wanted her to not only be my little, but my best friend, partner in crime, and the one I could call up at midnight to go get ice cream when I have just had a bad day. Lucky for me, this past September I gained all of that and more in my little. So, little, this article is for you.

When I first met you, I knew we would be inseparable. When I found out that you were my little, I jumped up and down with excitement. Every time I saw you, after I found out you were mine, I could barely keep it a secret. Here are some of my favorite things about you that make you the best and most perfect little that I wanted.

1. You are a true friend. I can come to you with all of my problems and know that you are going to tell me like it is. You tell me when the boy I am crushing on is a total player, and that I deserve better than him. You tell me that I can do anything I put my mind to. You tell me not to be worried about anything. I know that I can always come to you for advice and when I really need to vent about my problems.

2. You are practically my mini me. We like the same things, say the same things, do the same things, the list goes on. It is crazy how much we are alike, and everyone knows it. If I had a dollar for every time someone has said, “Oh yeah, that is definitely Alli’s little,” I could pay for my college tuition.

3. You are my workout partner. Now matter how rough working out can be at times, having you by my side just makes it easier. You push me to be the best me that I can be, and I am so thankful for that.

4. You trash-talk the boys who break my heart. I know I can always count on you to point out all of the bad things about the boy to me that I had somehow been blind to the whole time.

5. You make me proud. You are always doing nice things for other people, and I never hear you complain about anything - except for biology. You see the good in every single person, and you are someone who I look up to even though you are younger than me.

I am so so thankful to be your biggie, smalls. I love you.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
