Dear Manhattan

A letter to a friend I miss.

Dear Manhattan,

Hello my old friend! I’m sorry that I haven’t been around too much lately… I know I can still see your skyline from my town at night and I know that you are still there, but I miss you very much. I miss your rushing streets and subway cars. I miss your museums and your endless galleries.

I saw some pictures from your beautiful Manhattanhenge sunset a few weeks ago. Next year, I will try to be able to be with you to see the magic myself. Tell me, has anything changed since I left? I’m sure the streets are still filled with people from all over the city, all over the world. I cannot wait to be back in those crowds with you again. Have you heard any exciting new languages lately? I always loved that about you. You appreciated and welcomed visitors from nations far and wide, and gave everyone a place to call home.

I wonder what new billboards have popped up, illuminating the already luminescent Times Square with the marvelous sounds and colors of the latest advertisements. I never thought I’d miss those sights. I have to let you know, you are quite the talk of the town right now with the arrival of the Museum of Ice Cream. I hope I get a chance to visit when I’m back.

Do the taxis still dart around like magic carpets carrying the locals and the visitors across the neighborhoods? Can you still smell the hot pretzels cooking on the stands and the peanuts roasting in honey and sugar?

If you run into Fifth Avenue, then please tell him I’ll be back soon to spend some time with The Met and his talented friends. Let the Empire State Building know I am eagerly awaiting the moment I can see him light up the sky again. And of course, give my love to Lady Liberty and let her know I miss seeing her.

I promise I will be home soon. Please don’t forget about me.

Love always,

A City Girl

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
