An Open Letter To My Little

"If you feel you're sinking, I will jump right over into cold, cold water for you."

An Open Letter To My Little
Caroline Russell

Little Bit,

The big/little process was terrifying. I didn't know who I'd get paired up with, and I had no idea if they'd like me. No one could have prepared me for what I was getting myself into when I decided to become a big. There's no one else I'd rather be a mentor to within our sorority. I couldn't be happier with how everything turned out. Little, I hope you know that you're perfect. I may be your mentor, but you sure have taught me a lot in the short time I've known you. The Biebs said it best:

"You shouldn't be drowning on your own."

Little, I will always be here through every battle. I will carry you to shore when life is trying to pull you down. I'm here every step of the way.

"Although time may take us into different places I will still be patient with you."

I have no idea what I'm doing next week, let alone after graduation. We may not always be at the same school and two minutes from each other, but I will always be here. I'm only a phone call away.

"I won't let go; I'll be your lifeline tonight."

No matter what happens, I'm always here. I'll never let the waters consume you. Know you can lean on me for support through anything.

"Cause we all get lost sometimes, you know? It's how we learn and how we grow."

You came into my life at the perfect time. I may be a bit lost, but I know that you'll help me find my way out of anything. You've taught me a lot already, and, despite the fact that I'm you're mentor, your presence in my life is helping me to grow to be a better woman.

"Save me from my rocking boat. I just want to stay afloat."

Whether you know it or not, you've saved me. You steadied the rocking boat that is my life a little bit the moment you walked into my life. You've helped keep my head above water, and I hope you know I'm here to do the same. Always.

"I hope someone's gonna take me home, somewhere I can rest my soul."

You are a ray of sunshine. In the midst of the craziness, I feel calm with you. You're one of the few people that have helped make school feel like home away from home. I'm always here to take you home when you need it.

In high tide or low tide, I'll be by your side,

Biggie.

5 Things To Do That Are Better Than Writing A Paper

Don't waste your time trying to write that paper when there are so many more interesting things you could be doing.

Writing a paper is never fun and is rarely rewarding. The writer's block, the page requirement, be specific, but don’t summarize, make sure you fixed any grammatical errors, did you even use spellcheck? and analyze, analyze, analyze.

Papers can be a major pain. They take up so much time and effort that by the end of the process you hate yourself and you hate the professor for making life so difficult. Questions of your existence start roaming in your mind. Am I even cut out for college if I can’t write a single paper? Am I even capable of taking care of myself if I lack the energy to open my laptop and start typing?

I can barely remember back when I was the only child. Most would say it’s because it is extremely difficult to remember things as a toddler but I would say it's because I was bored until my sister came along. My mother always says how important the "sister bond" is and with every year that passes I realize how right she is. Instead of writing a novel about all of the wonderful things there are about having a sister I decided to list a few of them instead.

It is the time of our lives that we are beginning to enter the adult world and most of us, if not all of us, have no idea what we are doing. It's like starting a video game, but skipping the tutorial. We're all just running around aimlessly hoping we accidentally do something right that moves us along the right path. Now that graduation has just happened, or is right around the corner for some of us, it's time to start thinking about how we are going to take care of ourselves once we are on our own.

If you’re anything like me, you love a good cup of coffee. My coffee always comes from Starbucks; I refuse to drink it from anywhere else. Over the years, it’s become one of my biggest addictions. College involves a whirlwind of emotions, whether it’s from the stress of an assignment (or twenty), or from fighting with your roommate. It can be overwhelming at times and it’s important to take a step a back and calmly think things over. Maybe gain some perspective.
