Dear Future Sorority Girls,
First off, I want to say sorry. I've been there during recruitment when you're standing outside your first house about to pass out from the excitement, nervousness, or fear, or just the fact that it is blazing hot out. I've been there when you are sweating your butt off in each house worried you are going to mess up your words, or your sundress is too tight, or you are going to trip up the stairs on the house tours. I've been there standing next to a beautiful blonde who is trying to tell you about their philanthropy and you just cannot pay attention because across from you is a giant cupcake with pink frosting. And you've barely eaten all day. And all you want to do is stuff it in your mouth. But you can't because she could be your future sister and what if she judges you -- and then you scarf it down, because who doesn't like cupcakes?
Recruitment is basically a well-organized mess. We try and prepare for all you future new members, and you try your hardest to prepare for us. But it is all a game of chance. As much as we both prepare, we are not sure what is going to happen. During my recruitment experience we all got caught in a rainstorm and we left a trail of water in each house we went to. Very unlucky circumstance, but it just added to the experience.
I've been there when you don't exactly click with the girls in a house and don't know how to feel, and I've been there when girls recruiting me have made me feel right at home like I found my place in the Greek world. Yes, it happens -- not every house is going to like you, and that might be heartbreaking. But I'm here to tell you that although many of the things described above may happen to you, it is going to be one of the best experiences of your life. You find people you mesh with, who fit you so well. I can't explain the feeling of finally getting to know what house you are in, and running down the street to you new sisters cheers.
It is such a whirlwind, but take it all in, appreciate every moment and have fun. We have long days and countless conversations, but just keep that smile on your face and I promise you will find your place. Keep with it, no matter how tired you are and no matter how many house fit or don't fit you, because it will change your life.
Love,
Freshman Who Loved Recruitment (and Maybe One of Your Future Sisters!)
