As the school year is right around the corner, most students are looking to their freshmen year at their college with some fear and anxiousness. I know I felt those same emotions last year around this time. I was excited to start a new chapter in my life but I was scared to leave home. It would be the first time my mother wasn't just a room away. I was also scared I wasn't going to make any friends or survive the college life but I was wrong. I made it through. I figured I would share some knowledge to incoming freshmen.
Don't be too scared. It is scary coming to new environment where you don't know everyone. I came from a small town high school and coming to a college is scary. Don't be afraid to just walk up to someone and start talking to them, they are probably just as scared as you. It's how you bond with your fellow freshmen. Also don't let your fear prevent you from doing things to a certain extent. If your fear is preventing you from doing drugs, that fear is good. But letting your fear get the best of you when someone invites you somewhere can lead to missed opportunities. Be fearless every once in awhile.
A second thing is don't overload yourself. This applies to clubs, classes and other things. Take your time to adjust to college before you go jumping into twelve clubs and seven classes a day. Overloading can lead to unnecessary stress and can be damaging. Set aside time to do homework and go to club meetings. Realize when you have overloaded yourself and don't be afraid to drop out of a club. Also do homework on weekends. There is nothing wrong with staying in on a Friday or Saturday night to study or do homework, lots of people do it. It can help lessen your load.
Take advantage of your adviser. I know this is kind of a given but they really do help you along in your journey. Mine has helped me land a job with the university and has helped me shape my future. Your advisers are there to help you. Be friends with them, they will help you well after you graduate. They have connections that you may not have and that can be useful after graduation.
Lastly, just enjoy college. College is a fun time and freshmen year is no different. You find your group and really find your place. I wouldn't change a thing about my freshmen year. I put myself out there and got some great friends out of it. I encourage you to do the same. Good luck!
